This weekend I celebrated my 20th birthday and I have to say it was probably the best birthday I have ever had. As I am currently at uni, I live away from home and this was my first birthday I wouldn’t be able to celebrate with my family and I was finding this really hard. However, my absolutely amazing best friend Nikkii, boyfriend Alex and society made sure that I didn’t even have time to think about missing home by throwing me the loveliest surprise party ever!
I had attempted to arrange my own celebrations in the shape of a cinema trip followed by a cheeky Nandos and karaoke night at the student’s union but was lead to believe that none of friends could make it. Little did I know that they had been asked to decline my invitation to add to the surprise! A few people came for the meal with me and we had a great time but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t internally getting upset at the number of ‘sorry I can’t make it tonight’ texts I was receiving.
Nikkii and Alex managed to convince me that we should still go to karaoke just the three of us as we would still have a great time and I agreed, got ready and remained completely oblivious to the fact that whilst I was doing so Nikkii was running back and forth to the SU with some others to set up.
We headed over to karaoke and as I walked in I was greeted by around 30 of my closest friends pulling party poppers and yelling ‘surpriseeeeee!’ I literally could not believe it – I think I actually tried to run away in shock and it definitely took everything in me not to burst into tears. I’m not easily surprised but I had absolutely no idea that this was going to happen and I still can’t really believe all the thought and effort that went into pulling it off, not to mention the amount of people that came to celebrate with me. I feel so, so humbled and lucky to have such amazing people in my life.
As the night went on we had an amazing time! We sang (world of our own by Westlife of course), danced and consumed a lot of alcohol – being the birthday girl you find that a lot of people want to buy you shots. The DJ did a count down to midnight for me and everyone sang happy birthday and it was just the best night ever. A few of us also headed to the club once karaoke ended and continued the birthday celebrations there.
Later that morning, after we had slept, I opened some cards that had arrived from my family before heading to watch a wheelchair basketball game at the University arena and then some lunch. I saw in the end of my birthday cwtched up in bed with Alex feeling so loved and so happy.
I still have some birthday things to look forward to as Alex’s present to me is a big shopping trip next week and dinner out so I can still be a low key birthday girl right? I can’t wait to see what my 20th year brings and I have no idea how my 21st will top this.
To any of my friends that happen to be reading this, thank you for giving me the best birthday ever – I am so lucky to have you.
Meg xo
