So yesterday marked 5 years since Alex and I became an item. Yep you heard me right.  5 YEARS! When I sit down and think about it that’s actually a really long time that has flown by. I’m 20 so I have been in a relationship with Alex for 1/4 of my life. To some that may be scary but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Here’s what we got up to celebrating our big day.

First off, I woke up to a lovely status that Alex had uploaded with a photo of us. This may not seem like a big deal but Alex is a total social media phobe and very rarely posts anything so this was a lush little thing to wake up to! I had also created 5 photo collages to show five years worth of our adventures and memories. I then headed down stairs and made us both a full English breakfast which we enjoyed with a bottle of Schleur – on a student budget this was the equivalent of a feast! We sat down and enjoyed our breakfast together, chatting and just enjoying each other’s company.

I then gave Alex his present. I am really tight for money at the moment and was gutted that I couldn’t afford to get him something big. I ended up getting him this super cute quentin blake illustrated card and a housewarming present to celebrate us living together in our own house from September. The sign reads “what I love most about my home is who I share it with.” He absolutely loved it and he shared that he was really close to getting my the same card – we are very much in sync! Alex is also strapped for cash at the moment so told me he hadn’t been able to get me a present which I was fine with as all I really wanted was to spend the day with him.

However, I was later told to be ready to leave our house at 18:15 because we were going somewhere that was a surprise. I had no idea what to expect and originally thought we were just going for a walk. We strolled into town and Alex took me up onto the benches in the middle of Cathedral Square and gave me a card with the sweetest message inside.  He then took my hand and walked me in and back out of several restaurants to tease me before finally letting me know that he had booked us a table at Zizzi’s. This is our go to restaurant when we want something a little bit nicer than Nando’s but I was worried about money. Alex was adamant this was where we were going as we had to celebrate our 5th anniversary in style. So in we went.

I was treated like an absolute princess. The waiter came to take drinks orders and I asked for a tap water before Alex orders us a bottle of wine and a starter of garlic bread! We then ordered our mains. We went for our usuals – Alex had the pork meatballs al forno and I had the Italian hot pizza as I am OBSESSED with spicy food. Alex also treated me to a dessert which was the most gooey and chocolatey pud going. It was a gorgeous meal and we remembered we had a  voucher from Alex’s aunty that we still had to spend so we used that for our meal!

While we finished our wine, Alex started asking me about how I felt about not being musical director anymore and telling me how proud he was of everything I had achieved this year. He asked if I had anything to commemorate it all with and before I could answer he handed me a little pandora box with a treble clef charm inside. I literally started to tear up as it was so lovely and everything he had said meant so much to me. I was wearing my bracelet so added the charm there and then. I would never expect anything materialistic from him, especially with our current financial situation. I honestly just enjoyed talking to him about anything and everything over dinner and spending the day together. The charm was an added bonus and means so much to me. He really put in so much effort to make our anniversary special and I feel so blessed.

I’m aware this blog is super soppy but I honestly love him so much and don’t know what I would do without him. We just click. I truly believe that regardless of where we end up he is the love of my life. We have been through so much that I don’t think many people go through in their entire lives and he is the one person that knows everything little thing about me. I feel so lucky to have best friend and boyfriend all in one and someone who loves me despite my flaws.

Thank you for the best anniversary and 5 years Alex.

Here’s to the next,

Meg xo
