Hiya guys. I can’t believe my third and final fresher’s week is upon us! I am gonna do a proper freshers blog at the end of the week but yesterday I did something I’m pretty proud of so thought it was worth its own post!
My university held a fresher’s cider festival this weekend and I was asked if I knew anyone would like to perform some live music at the event. Despite doing musical theatre and constant singing in my own time, I NEVER put myself forward for this kinda thing. I’m not sure why, I think not feeling good enough in the past has played a large role in this and my nerves usually take over like mad and I end up embarrassed and annoyed at myself.
However, since meeting my amazing group of uni pals I have become a lot more confident in myself and decided that (the same as last year) I am going to say yes to as many opportunities as I can this year – after all I’m only gonna get to do uni once *cries*.
So I messaged my good pal and favourite guitarist Harry to see if he was around and fancied throwing together some content to perform. He was keen so I signed us up and we got given a 1.5 hour slot to perform for in the evening. It was originally supposed to be outside but due to weather the end of the festival got moved inside the SU which worked out just fine and was a lot warmer!
I love performing with Harry. He’s such a talented lad and we read each other pretty well on stage so can just go with the flow if one of us messes up or decides to add something new in. I know my nervous self is in good hands when I’m up there with him.
This was our original set;
Toxic – Britney Spears
Mr Brightside – The Killers
Too Good at Goodbyes – Sam Smith
Treasure – Bruno Mars
Locked Out of Heaven – Bruno Mars
This is Me (mashup of Greatest Showman and Camp Rock)
I Wanna Dance With Somebody – Whitney Houston
World of Our Own – Westlife (for you Jordan Smith)
Livin’ on a Prayer – Bon Jovi
Love on the Brain – Rihanna
Breaking Free – HSM
This Love – Maroon 5
Valerie – Amy Winehouse
Titanium – Sia
Use Somebody – Kings of Leon
I’m Yours – Jason Mraz
Obviously – McFly
Wonderwall/If I Were A Boy mashup – Oasis/Beyonce
Blame it on the Boogie – The Jacksons
We didn’t quite get through them all but we played the vast majority and it was a lot of fun. My little twinny Shan joined us for some so we could showcase some harmonies and change it up a little as a full hour of my singing would be too much for anyone!
It was also so nice to have friends at the festival watching and supporting us (and drinking a LOT of cider).
It was no where near perfect. We fudged a few bits and were a bit under rehearsed but it was a fab night. I had some lovely people come up to me after the gig and compliment me so I was chuffed. The night was far from over though as we headed to a house party and the the club afterwards!
I still need to get my wobbly nerves about singing in front of people under control but I’m getting there. Hopefully by auditions for the pantomime I’ll have gotten rid of them completely – who knows.
Happy Freshers!
Meg xo
